Machair, lifting potatoes.
| Machair is a rare coastal habitat,
formed by windblown sand. It is famous for its vast array of
wildflowers. Machair land is relatively fertile and is divided into a patchwork of narrow strips, each belonging to a different croft. In Bragar the machair is still well cultivated, the corncrake can be heard in summer and traditional sheaves and stacks of oats, barley and rye can be seen in autumn. Seaweed
: the photo below shows me unloading seaweed, which is
washed up in
abundance on the shore here, and we use it to fertilise our crops. The
chickens are ours.
